Resilient Rangers rebound in third, spearing the Steelheads

The home dominance continues.

Down two goals heading into period number three, in line for the loss, the Kitchener Rangers scored five unanswered, and doubled the Mississauga Steelheads 6-3.

The Rangers were trailing the Trout 3-1 heading into the final frame, after surrendering one goal in the first and two in the second. After Max Iafrate laced into the team during the second intermission, the Rangers fire in five in the final frame.

The win is the team’s ninth straight at the Memorial Auditorium. They pulled it off without Captain Liam Maaskant and Adam Mascherin. They were injured in Thursday’s loss to the Spitfires in Windsor.

Mason Kohn, who’s a big part of the team’s penalty killing unit, was slapped with a match penalty in the second period for slew-footing. The Ontario Hockey League will look into the call, and Kohn will likely face further discipline.

“Rule 21.2 – Short-handed – In addition to the match penalty, the player shall be automatically suspended from further competition until the Commissioner has ruled on the issue.”

In the third period, Brandon Robinson got things going for the Blueshirts notching the last two-thirds of his hat-trick in the first four minutes.

Both Robinson markers came on the power play, which was three-for-four on the night.

In the next five minutes, Darby Llewellyn, Mike Davies and Dylan DiPerna all cashed in on the offensive output of five markers in under nine minutes

Jack Kilgour played his best game as a Ranger. He earned his first two points in the OHL; both assists. Sean Allen made his OHL debut as a 16-year-old after being called up from the Kitchener Dutchmen. The Puslinch native was a third-round pick in 2014.

Mississauga native, Dawson Carty stopped 29 of 32 shots in the win against his former team. It was just Carty’s second start – both wins – since the arrival of Jake Paterson, and first nod in nearly a month.

The Rangers take off to Belleville tomorrow night for a game Monday against the Bulls. They’re on the road next weekend to begin their Northern Ontario swing with stops in North Bay, Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie.

It’s a huge stretch of games for a team that has lost four straight on the road. The Rangers sit in fifth spot in the Western Conference trailing the Guelph Storm for fourth by three points, with two games in hand.
