Waterloo to spend $640,000 on upgrades to RIM Park

$640,000 is being put towards upgrades at RIM Park.

The City of Waterloo’s Finance and Strategic Planning Committee passed the funding at Monday’s meeting.

In total, $600,000 will go towards installing new artificial turf, with another $40,000 being set aside for park structural rehabilitation. The Waterloo Recreation Complex is also getting $100,000 for change room renovations and locker replacement.

City officials say the artificial turf at RIM Park has been deemed a high priority since the existing original turf is beyond its useful lifespan and has become a health and safety concern due to ongoing repairs.

Sunda Siva, Director of facilities & fleet with the city tells 570 News, “the maximum life span recommended is 13 years and now we are in the 14 plus years.”

The new turf is expected to be installed in the late spring/early summer months in hopes of avoiding conflict with the park’s programming.

Siva expects the new turf to be installed by May/June.
