Fatal 2011 Woodstock apartment explosion/fire ruled negligent arson

More than three years after an explosion leveled a Woodstock apartment building, killing two people, a cause has been determined.

The blast in March 2011 on Victoria Street claimed the lives of two elderly residents.

According to CTV News, the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office says, while it does not appear to have been an intentional act, it has ruled the cause as a “negligent arson.”

The report says the explosion was caused by pentane gases in the building’s laundry room. Apparently, the plastic was melted in a clothes dryer. Pentane is a highly flammable solvent. Officials still know how it ended up in a dryer.

The explosion and fire left 65 people homeless.

A new building has since been erected on that property.
