Scottish independence referendum could impact Canada

It is the final day of campaigning for a Scottish independence referendum.

Supporters for separation feel they are will be victorious while those who want Scotland to stay in the United Kingdom fear the UK will crumble if the country separates. Polls show that the vote is too close to call.

Maclean’s Political Editor Paul Wells is in Edinburgh and tells 570 News if Scotland does separate, there are implications for Canada.

“You can bet that the Parti Québécois would be mighty encouraged by news like that and we will all be back into separation debate in Quebec and in the rest of Canada. Also, David Cameron has said that he would be personally humiliated if he loses this referendum, that’s never good news for Canada if the government of UK is demoralized and distracted.”

So far an astonishing 97% of Scots have registered to cast a ballot in Thursday’s vote.

Meantime the local British community is speaking out about the referendum.

Karen Bullock, owner of Best of British in Cambridge tells 570 News many of her customers are Scottish and hope that Scotland stays a part of the UK.

She agrees.

“I think it will be very close and go right down to the wire…I hope they really think about what they are doing and make the best choice.”

On the other hand, a local Scottish business declined an interview on the subject since many of their customers are split on the issue. They tell 570 News the referendum is not only a hot topic in Scotland but also here amongst the Scottish community in Waterloo Region.
