Canoe tips during high school trip on the Grand

Everyone is ok after after a canoe tipped during a high school trip on the Grand River Tuesday.

A group of about 40 students and teachers from North Park Collegiate and Vocational School in Brantford were travelling from south Cambridge in the Galt area to Glen Morris.

Along the way one, of the canoes tipped over. Officials say two other students and a teacher came to the rescue and brought everyone to shore.

Brad Churchill, Platoon Chief with the Cambridge Fire Department tells 570 News the water in that section was moving quickly due to all the rain we’ve had in the past couple of days, but the conditions were not too dangerous for a canoe trip

“As long as people are wearing their life jackets and following the rules of canoeing and kayaking down the river and they’ve told someone where they are going, and they are with an adult with a means to call for help, then absolutely I think it’s perfectly fine.”

Churchill adds it was extremely helpful that the teacher had a cellphone to call 9-1-1 on.

All four students and the teacher have been sent to Cambridge Memorial Hospital for assessment. Officials say one has unknown injuries.
