Transgender minor hockey players in Ontario can now choose their dressing room

Minor hockey players under the auspices of Hockey Canada in Ontario are now able to choose a dressing room based on whether they see themselves as male or female.

The change follows a settlement of a human rights complaint against Hockey Canada.

The agreement, which also includes an educational component, is aimed at protecting young players from discrimination and harassment based on their transgender status.

Seventeen-year-old Jesse Thompson, of Oshawa, Ontario filed the complaint last year.

He says he hopes other kids will now feel they don’t have to hide any more.

Gender rights activists both inside and outside the sports world are applauding the agreement.
