Today marks the third anniversary of the Goderich Tornado

On Sunday August 21st, 2011 several downtown businesses, century old buildings and churches were destroyed in one of Canada’s prettiest towns.

Mayor of Goderich – Deb Shewfelt was a guest on 570s midday show and says it took two years to overcome the devastation.

“It was certainly quite a shock to a lot of people. Even now when the clouds form over the lake it leaves people very nervous because the weather for the past two years has been very weird and we know that Tornado’s can happen anywhere.”

Shewfelt adds downtown businesses are almost finished being re-built. “As you approach the square downtown there were five businesses that were totally flattened. We have brand new buildings that should be opened by October.”

One person was killed and 37 people were also injured in the horrific storm. Reports say it was the strongest tornado to hit Ontario in 15 years.
