Forty people receive Canadian citizenship at TheMuseum

Forty people swore the oath to Queen Elizabeth II at TheMuseum in downtown Kitchener today.

It’s the third time TheMuseum is hosting the event.

“I don’t remember the day I became a Canadian, because I was born” says TheMuseum CEO, David Marskell. “These people have the benefit to remember that day forever. And whatever their back story is of why they came here, or why they needed to become, or wanted to become a Canadian citizen, I just find it very very powerful.”

Among the forty people claiming Canadian citizenship today, the Skarep family.

Fikrija and her husband Damir came to Canada just over five years ago, leaving behind the troubles of their country.

“I had fled the war. We had a big war in Yugoslavia at the moment, so I fled the army because it wasn’t my war” says Damir Skarep. “Through my years of going through Europe I decided to settle in Canada.”

The Pacheco’s also call Canada home now.

“When you have family, you are able to leave anything else to support them to give them a better future” says Daniel Pacheco. “That’s why we’re here.”

Daniel’s wife Viviana echoed that sentiment, as they both look at a brighter future for the family of their children.

“I miss my family, I miss my friends, I miss my career but I look at my kids and see the future that they will have and it’s an awesome feeling” says Daniel’s wife, Viviana.
