Premier Kathleen Wynne defends overspending claims after reintroduced budget

Some difficult decisions have been made by Wynne’s Liberals, and according to the Premier, those include tax hikes for the top 2 per cent of earners.

This comes after the reintroduced budget and overspending claims by the opposition parties.

Premier Wynne was on the 570 News Midday Show. She says these hard choices also include not having money in the $130 billion budget for collective bargaining for public sector workers.

We don’t have more money for compensation increases. We’ve been very clear with public sector workers on that and that’s difficult … that will make collective bargaining very challenging but we have to do that. We have to stick to that because it’s so important for the long term prosperity of the province.”

Wynne maintains that the budget reflects the needs of the province.

The fact is that we have an economy that is recovering but is still fragile and so making investments in infrastructure like transit, like roads and bridges, likes hospitals and schools is necessary right now.

Wynne went on to say that the Liberals recognize that there is a deficit and fiscal situations that need to be dealt with. The balance of the infrastructure decisions, combined with the strenuous choices of top earner tax hikes and not enough money for collective bargaining for compensation for public section workers is something the Premier says is crucial.

We have to do both these things at once in order for the economy to thrive.
