Cambridge eyeing two new sports and rec. complexes

Cambridge is looking at spending tens of millions of dollars on two new sports and recreation complexes.

The city’s recreational sites and ice pads are showing their age and can’t keep up with the growing population.

Their conditions and size have led to the city going forward with the projects that will allow for the closure of some of  the older buildings and consolidating them into newer and larger facilities.

Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig says one recreation complex that has already been allocated funding and is expected to cost between $10 and 12 million.

They are awaiting final consultations with the school boards and the region.  Council already has land on Wesley Boulevard southeast of Main and Dundas.

The other is a major sports complex.  Craig says it still needs a lot of council discussion, public input and new land acquisition

He says they are looking at something that  can host large events and bring big tournaments to the city.

The recreation complex will include a pool, a gymnasium and could be shared by two schools.

The sports complex proposal will be presented to council next week.
