Former BlackBerry exec. speaks out about Keystone pipeline

Former BlackBerry co-CEO Jim Balsillie is weighing in on the heated debate over the proposed Keystone X-L pipeline.

Speaking in Vancouver yesterday, Balsillie said framing the debate as “for or against the oil sands” or industry in general is unproductive.

He said  it’s innovation that will “truly put ourselves on a path towards sustainability.”

Balsille, who chairs Sustainable Development Technology Canada, and warns against radical change in policy.

He said, “Given our current capacities, radically reversing our natural resource policies is tantamount to economic and political suicide, but that doesn’t mean the status quo is safe.”

He added that “private sector’s participation in climate financing is critical if we are to limit temperature growth” by 2050.
