Premier announces full-day, two-way GO service between Waterloo Region and Toronto

Premier Kathleen Wynne was in Waterloo Region today to announce full day, two-way GO train service between Waterloo Region and Toronto.

The major public transit announcement was made at the Waterloo Inn over the lunch hour.

The project will add four extra trains by the end of 2016; two in the morning and two at night, meaning faster travel time. They’ll also upgrade the rail corridor and build an extra train layover facility.

One train could be an express train which would cut 20 to 30 minutes off of one trip.

The plan is dependent on whether or not the upcoming budget is supported by the NDP and Progressive Conservatives.

“We’re bringing forward a budget and we would like to see that budget passed. this is our plan that we’re putting forward” says Wynne. “My hope is that we’ll have support for the budget in the legislature. If we don’t, if we have to go to an election, we will certainly be campaigning on this plan.”

“It’s something that we’d have to look at” said PC MPP for Kitchener Conestoga, Michael Harris. “Today you didn’t hear how much this will actually cost taxpayers. I think that those details are important before making a major announcement. Ontario has a significant deficit and I think it’s prudent that before we make decisions right before an election, we know how much this is going to cost.”

The plan would also create an estimated 33,000 net new jobs, and 1,000 additional daily passengers on the GO service.
