Leafs great helps donate to St. Jacobs Farmers Market Vendor Relief Fund

The St. Jacobs Farmers Market Vendor Relief Fund got a boost from a high profile hockey player today.

On behalf of Sun Life Financial, former Toronto Maple Leaf and Hockey Hall of Famer, Darryl Sittler presented the $10,000  donation today.

“When they asked me to come out here and be a part of it, obviously it’s close to home with me growing up in the St. Jacobs area” says Sittler. “I worked at the market so I know all about it and the importance to the community. It’s nice to see they’re back on their feet and running again.”

The main building of the farmers market burned down last September, causing over $2 million dollars in damage. Sittler, like many, was devastated to hear that the fire had completely destroyed the main building.

“I was shocked like everyone else, because I have been there in the last few years when we come up in the area, like many tourists that’s one place we want to go to” adds Sittler. “I was saddened because of the history and the tradition it has in the community.”

“I also was quite aware of what this community, when things are going against you and you have some adversity, everybody chips in and digs in and I knew that they would build it back and get it back on it’s feet” says Sittler. “The timing, obviously, was right around Oktoberfest, the fall harvest, and those sorts of things, but the people have done a wonderful job of restoring it again.”

The donation will help provide financial relief for uninsured vendors, lost wages and inventory.
