Canadian journalist and former CBC television host Roy Bonisteel dies at 83

TRENTON, Ont. – Former CBC television host and journalist Roy Bonisteel has died at the age of 83.
Bonisteel hosted the current affairs program Man Alive from 1967 to 1989 and became a public speaker, writer and citizenship judge.
Lesley Bonisteel says her father had been battling cancer and passed away in early Friday morning at his home north of Trenton.
Bonisteel, who was born in Ameliasburgh in Prince Edward County, Ont., started his journalism career at newspapers in Belleville and Trenton.
He went on to become a radio announcer, working in the industry in Belleville, St. Catharines and Vancouver.
Bonisteel would turn his experiences as the host of Man Alive into writing material — he wrote two books that focused on interviews with figures such as Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama.
He also wrote a memoir about his childhood on a farm in Ontario’s Bay of Quinte area, and a collection of magazine columns.
In 1994 Bonisteel was named to the Order of Canada.
He is survived by his daughter, son Steve Bonisteel, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial is planned for a later date.
