Casino vote tonight

Woolwich Township Council will decide later on tonight whether or not to roll the dice on a proposed Ontario Lottery and Gaming casino.

Mayor Todd Cowan calls it a monumental decision.

“It’s very significant because the township had voted just over ten years ago on this. I guess we can see the effects ten years after…the racetrack left Woolwich.”

Cowan adds a gaming facility could go a long way to reducing the township’s infrastructure deficit when it comes to things like roads and bridges.

He says if council votes “yes” it’ll open the door to the possibility of a casino being built in the township, but he points out there would have to be further discussions with the OLG.

Regional Chair Ken Seiling is scheduled to appear as a delegation and speak as a citizen of the township.

Waterloo Region Police Chief Matt Torigian will also address council.
