Ottawa Spending Spring Budget

Ottawa is looking to make a big purchase.

The federal government is taking steps to buy up to 24 helicopters for the coast guard. They have issued a letter of interest to the aerospace sector and are looking for contractors for the sale.

The project aims to start buying up the helicopters over the next five years.

The choppers would help the coast guard fleet support missions of the Polar-class icebreaker, named for  former prime minister John G. Diefenbaker, starting its construction in 2017.

Ottawa is saying the new helicopters will be used in service for 30 years.

The purchase still does not have a price tag, but the federal government said their spring budget of $5.2 Billion would allow for upgrades to the fleet of helicopters and vessels over the next 11 years.
