Getting wired for back to school

TORONTO, Ont. – Students head back to school soon, so parents might want to start managing their child’s time in front of the computer and get ready for a new routine.

Back-to-school means added responsibility, homework, and extracurricular activities, and balancing it all is no easy task.

It’s important to sit down at the beginning of the school year as a family and decide who’s doing what and when.

Ask each child what his or her favourite activities are.

Jacki Brown, vice-president of Professional Organizers in Canada, said limiting computer, tweeting and gaming can help children stay on track.

Time away from that screen is important particularly before bed. Research shows children should have at least half an hour before bed away from the computer to get a good sleep.

Exchanging media time for exercise is not only good for the body, but good for the mind.

Limiting computer time can be difficult when homework comes into play, but organizing time periods for computer and family fun time will help your child to not be overwhelmed.

It’s also important to get children into a routine before school starts, getting to bed earlier and establishing a breakfast routine. That way when school starts, it’s not such a shock.
