Federal court says “unreasonable” to impose third-party manager in Attawapiskat

OTTAWA, Ont. – The federal court has ruled it was “unreasonable in all circumstances” for the Harper government to impose a third-party manager in Attawapiskat, following last year’s housing crisis.
In what is being called a “stinging ruling”, the court has agreed to a judicial review, saying decisions made in the glare of publicity and politically-charged debates do not always lead to a reasonable resolution of the relevant issue.
The federal government appointed the manager, alleging the community had mismanaged funds, after the Northern Ontario native band declared the crisis.
The manager has since been withdrawn, but the Attawapiskat First Nation refused to drop its court challenge.
