Concerns Grow Over Local Gravel Pits

Rising concerns from Waterloo Region’s agricultural community about the number of gravel pits being planned, has prompted the review of the Resources Act and a public hearing set for today in Kitchener.
Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Michael Harris fought for the review to take place locally. He tells 570News, before the hearings begin Ontario’s Standing Committee on General Government will tour three gravel pits, “One that’s being rehabilitated, one that’s an active recycle depot and then another site that helps create habitat and increase flood capacity in the Grand River.”
The three sites that Harris is talking about are The Capital Paving Wellington Pit, the Lafarge Quarry and Preston Sand and Gravel – Snyder Flats.
Committee members will, however, avoid touring West Montrose. A site where plans to put in a quarry may put the last covered bridge in the province in jeopardy.
Harris says it’s important that the review is being held here, saying it’s a positive step for a meaningful review of the act, “Based on the number of current and future aggregate applications here in our Region, it only makes sense for the community to hear from local officials, residents and industry representatives here in our community.”
The hearings will be held at the Holiday Inn at 30 Fairway Road South from 1:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Monday.
