Green Party picks candidate

The Green Party of Ontario has chosen a candidate to run in the yet-called Kitchener-Waterloo byelection.

Stacey Danckert won the nomination, at a meeting of about 50 people held Wednesday night at the Adult Recreation Centre on King Street South near Allen Street in Waterloo.

Danckert is a Research Scientist with a PhD in Psychology. She is married, with two boys. Her children drove her desire to affect positive change in the community, she said, “I have always valued environmental sustainability, but it was when I looked at my son when he was first born, and wondered what his life would hold, that I knew that I would have to start to do more.”

Danckert has served on the City of Kitchener’s Environmental Advisory Committee for the last two years, “I’ve learned a lot about public consultation, policy changes, and even a bit about bureaucracy,” Danckert said.

“I want to do more, at this point. That is what has brought me here today.”

A vote for the Green Party is a vote for change, Danckert said, “I think that people are a bit tired of having status-quo happening in government,  they’re tired of having people they can’t trust who aren’t representing the people who have actually elected them.”

“We have so many groups of fabulous people within this region who are supporting sustainable environmental policies, CREW (Community Renewable Energy Waterloo) and Sustainable Waterloo, and all of these groups I think make this community one that is willing to listen,” They are also groups Danckert plans to tap into as part of her plan to get the Green Party message out to the residents of Kitchener-Waterloo.

Danckert comments on the busy time ahead of the byelection being called, “I’m very excited, the opportunity to try to affect positive change within this community is one that I find really thrilling. I know we have so many great people working with me on this, that I think it will be a great experience.”

Leader of the Green Party of Ontario, Mike Schreiner said Danckert is a fantastic candidate, “She’s very involved in the community, and I think she’ll take that leadership to the next level, and be a fantastic voice for Kitchener-Waterloo and Queen’s Park.”
