Kitchener Council has ratified a staff recommendation to demolish the grandstand at Centennial Stadium.
The recommendation was made by the Community and Infrastructure Services Committee at a meeting late last month.
The 3,000 seat grandstand failed an inspection last year and has been closed since due to public safety concerns.
In late-May, Director of Enterprises, Kim Kugler, told 570 News that righ now there just isn’t a need for a structure that big in the city anymore.
Kugler said the cost of repairing the structure is estimated $1.2-million, but to remove it would only cost just over $200,000.
The cost to remove the 45-year old structure will included in the Kitchener’s 2013 capital budget process.
The motion passed with a recorded vote of 6-5.
