Cable’s ‘Hatfields & McCoys’ blows away anything on broadcast

NEW YORK, N.Y. – History’s “Hatfields & McCoys” can turn back singers, dancers, reruns and anything else broadcast television networks throw at it.

The cable network special was the most-watched event in prime-time television last week, not just once but three times.

The Nielsen company says that the third part of the miniseries last week was seen by 14.3 million people. The first two were seen by 13.9 million and 13.1 million respectively.

The best that broadcast networks could muster last week was the Tuesday edition of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” which was seen by 11.5 million people.

It’s still rare for a cable program to have more viewers than anything on broadcast TV, and doesn’t happen outside television’s summer season.
