The Bruce White Atrium

A generous University of Waterloo Alumnus has named part of a newly constructed U.W. math building after his favourite high school teacher.

John Hele earned his Bachelor of Mathematics degree at U.W. in 1980, and says it was his grade 13 Calculus teacher at Kennedy in Windsor, Bruce White who taught him the discipline needed to learn.

“He didn’t really teach me mathematics, he taught me how to learn mathematics, and he has not only done this for me but for thousands and thousands of students from Windsor for many years.”

Hele went on to become the CFO and executive Vice President of Arch Capital Group Ltd., and according to Hele, Mr. White continues to teach about 200 students a week in his retirement.

The atrium of the newly constructed Mathematics 3 building will bear Mr. White’s name.
