Last day for Picketing

Local CUP-W members are walking the picket line on Trillium Drive for the last few remaining hours before they have to report back to work.

President of Local CUP-W John Wastell says that the current feeling among workers is anger and that they are hurt.

In regards to Parliament passing the bill Wastell says he “feels its a disgrace for this government to pass that kind of legislation. They have completely taken away the fair bargaining aspect in collective bargaining”

The legislation imposes wage hikes that were less than what Canada Post last offered.

The Government claimed the dispute was threatening Canada’s fragile economic recovery and that is why the legislation had to pass.

Letter sorting is to resume today and mail delivery tomorrow following speedy Senate approval of back-to-work legislation in the Canada Post dispute.

Wastell says that he has been talking with members who have been picketing and says he is trying to keep their moral up.

Says they have been beat before but believes they “will come through alright.”

Wastell added that “this is just not a fight between CUP-W and the Post office.  This is a fight between large corporations and unions. This is a fight against the working class, and we’re going push back. We’re not going to just stand back idol and let this occur to us.”
