Former NS deputy minister to head riot review: report

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) –  He’s looked into the Swissair crash and the Westray Mine disaster, and this evening there are reports former Nova Scotia deputy minister Douglas Keefe will head the review into the Stanley Cup Riot.

A profile on the Institute of Public Administration of Canada’s website describes Keefe as a frequent speaker on leadership and values.

“Values don’t just mark the boundary between right and wrong,” he is quoted as saying. “They shape our priorities and perceptions. They drive us and our organizations. It’s foolish to ignore them but generally we do.”

Meanwhile, the provincial NDP leader is talking about his expectations for the independent review. Adrian Dix says it’s clear that liquor controls were not strict enough that day, but he stopped short of calling for any specific changes before the review started.

“I think clearly there wasn’t strict enough liquor controls in this process, we don’t need an inquiry to find that,” he said. “…What we want out of this is a clear report, not searching for blame persay but searching for what happened so we understand what happened, and then we can take actions so it doesn’t happen again.”

The independent report is due out at end of August

Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson says city hall and the Vancouver Police Department will each conduct internal reviews of the riot as well, which will help to inform the independent review.
