Canada Post strike

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers plan to begin a series of rotating strikes at midnight tonight (ET) in Winnipeg if there’s no last-minute agreement with Canada Post.

The union says it’s taking action in a bid to get Canada Post to abandon its proposals for significant concessions.

It says the Winnipeg local will be on strike for 24 hours, and that the strike will then continue in other locations to be announced later.

Meantime, you may not worry about the effects of a potential strike by Canada Post workers but it would be bad news for local companies.

President and CEO of the Greater Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, Ian McLean says, “Most small businesses still use Canada post as a vehicle to get their invoices out to customers. So, clearly it will have an impact on all business, but in particular, small and medium-sized businesses that rely on getting their invoices out and getting paid in a timely fashion to keep their cash flow going.”

McLean says a prolonged mail strike would mean businesses would have to look at other options, which would likely be more expensive and harder to execute.

He adds that a strike would be bad news for the economy, especially in the middle of a recovery. He says, “…the region’s starting to see some moderate growth but I think many businesses still feel…that it’s sort of tepid growth at best and we don’t need things like this that would be self-inflicted wounds to our own economy.”
