Mubarak steps down

Egypt’s vice-president says Hosni Mubarak has resigned as president and handed control to the military.

Car horns were heard around Cairo in celebration after Vice-President Omar Suleiman made the announcement on national TV on Friday.

“In these difficult circumstances that the country is passing through, President Hosni Mubarak has decided to leave the position of the presidency,” Suleiman said. He has commissioned the armed forces council to direct the issues of the state.“

Even Canadians originally from other Arab countries were cheering the news, calling it a sign of change sweeping the Middle East.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Canada will be pushing for free and fair elections in Egypt and respect for the rule of law.

He’s also urging Egypt to respect its treaties and pursue peace in the Middle East.

Soha Elsayed, a local Canadian Egyptian tells 570 News it will make governments around the world realize there is a power to the people.

Waterloo resident, Rami Lewendy says she’s been fielding a lot of calls from happy family members in Egypt.

Lewendy says it shows democracy is for the people by the people.
