More on police hiring plan

The head of the Waterloo Regional Police Association is applauding the chief for proposing to hire more officers.

Police Chief, Matt Torigian announced yesterday the force hopes to add 60 officers to the front line to better service a growing population and improve response times.

Bruce Tucker says it’s a good first step, but warns that failing to fill gaps in the investigative branches like fraud, homicide and child exploitation is a concern.

“We’ve stopped the bleeding on the front line, now we have to meet the criteria and our required statutes in the investigative branches,” says Tucker.

Dozens of officers working in those branches were recently put on patrol.
