Noise concerns addressed

Kitchener residents concerned about noise at a temporary layover facility for GO Transit can have their questions answered today.

GO Transit officials are hosting an Open House from 5 to 8-pm at the DeGroote School of Medicine, 10 Victoria Street South, Kitchener.

“Our goal is to answer every question we can, every question that residents have and send them away satisfied and knowing all they can about the noise study and the temporary layover facility in their neighbourhood,” explains GO Transit spokesperson, Malon Edwards.

While no timeline has been determined, Edwards says GO considers a “temporary” layover facility to be something that’s in use “for a few years.”

The facility will be put to use next year, when GO begins a commuter service with two trains daily between Kitchener and Toronto. The trains will be parked on the tracks overnight between Park and King Street in downtown Kitchener and will begin to idle and warm up as early as 5 AM.

“What our analysis showed with the noise study is that two trains warming up in the morning for 30 minutes to an hour will be no louder than 55 decibels when standing outside on the tracks,” says Edwards. “That’s about the same level as a normal conversation.”

Edwards says residents have expressed concerns but he’s confident that they’ll be satisfied once they get the chance to meet with officials at today’s Open House.

GO Transit has taken out two ads in the paper and conducted a door-knocking campaign yesterday to make residents aware of today’s meeting.
