Operation Impact

The OPP long-weekend safety blitz is up and running, watching to keep everyone safe for both Thanksgiving and Oktoberfest.

The OPP and Waterloo Regional Police teamed up at the Cambridge Centre this morning, at the 401 and Hespeler Road, to officially launch the weekend patrols, with a couple of OPP’ers raising a glass to the occasion.

Constable Jamie Sharp and civilian staffperson, Leanne Schumacher, participated in a drinking-and-driving demonstration, each consuming alcohol in steady doses and taking breathalyzer tests as the morning progressed.

Constable Sharp was knocking back rye-and-gingers, Schumacher was drinking Coronas.

Schumacher tells 570 News she was very surprised to find after only two beers her breathalyzer tests were into the warning range, and would have resulted in an officer seizing her driver’s licence for three days.

As part of the safety event, the Ministry of Transportation was conducting vehicle inspections at the 401 and Hespeler.

One of the vehicles nabbed this morning was a van for the “Linda Whetham for Mayor” campaign, which was towed to a garage.

Driver, Glen Whetham, husband of the Cambridge Mayoral candidate, told 570 News at the scene the van was found to have a loose steering wheel and some problems in its front end.
