Local hospitals get money to improve wait times

The province is adding Cambridge Memorial and Guelph General to the list of local hospitals that receive funding to improve wait times.

The government announced today that it is expanding its Pay For Results program, which allows hospitals to do things like hire new staff.

Cambridge Memorial will receive 782 thousand dollars, while Guelph General will get 776 thousand.

CMH’s emergency department chief, Dr. Mark Shafir, welcomes the funding.

He says that since March, visits to the emergency room have increased 20 percent to a daily average of 140-150, up from 120.

St. Mary’s and Grand River already receive funding through the program but St. Mary’s will get a bonus this year for exceeding expectations.

The hospital will get more than half a million dollars more for lowering wait times by 23 percent.

Patients at St. Mary’s are waiting on average 1 hour and 20 minutes less in the emergency department to be treated.

The four local hospitals will receive a total of more than 3.2 million dollars under the program this year.
