City of Guelph charged in deadly wall collapse

The City of Guelph has been charged under the province’s Occupational Health and Safety Act after a deadly wall collapse at a civic park washroom last June.

Fourteen-year-old Isabel Warren was killed in the incident while she was on a break from a phys-ed class.

After the collapse, the city inspected several civic washrooms and temporarily closed some.

A press release from the city called the incident an “accident” and says it will obtain legal advice on how to respond to the charges.

The province is accusing the city of failing to ensure that every part of the structure could resist all loads it was subject to.

The architect of the wall has also been charged with  providing negligent or incompetent advice.
