Neighbours rush in to help farmer

“Unreal” — that’s how the outpouring of community support is described by a farmer cleaning up from a million dollar fire.

Bruce Koehler lost a third of his Holstein herd Monday afternoon when a fire destroyed his barn at 2546 Berlett’s Road in Wellesley.

Koehler says several neighbours and even people he doesn’t know were out on his property immediately to help out during the blaze, and they’re still there today.

He says neighbours are housing and looking after the remaining head from his 65 cows.

Others have brought in back-hoes and tractors to help clean up at the site of the former barn.

Koehler says he’s insured for about half of the roughly $1-million loss and rebuilding costs from the fire.

Koehler says they’ll rebuild the barn and get new silos up as soon as possible.

The rubble of the barn is still smoldering and smoking today, with small pockets of fire here and there.
