NEWS RELEASE
RARE CHARITABLE RESEARCH RESERVE
*************************
Between Monday, Sept.13 and Sunday, Sept. 19, the rare Charitable Research Reserve will hold its twelfth annual Walk and Run for rare event, raising funds to preserve environmentally sensitive lands in Waterloo Region and Wellington County. The event supports the organization’s Turn the Map Green campaign while encouraging participants to get active and experience the walking and nature trails the area has to offer. Every $2 raised protects one square metre of land in perpetuity.

“This is the second year that rare’s Walk and Run event has gone virtual to maintain COVID-19 safety protocols,” says James Bow, Communications Officer at rare. “This means that everyone can participate in the event at whatever time works for them during the week, and wherever they can walk or run five kilometres. It’s an excellent chance for people throughout the region to explore their neighbourhood and appreciate the natural settings that are just around the corner from where they live, all while raising funds to preserve these vital resources.”

“Sunday, September 19 is the last day of the event, and we’ll be announcing prize winners, as well as the total amount raised to help Turn the Map Green.” added Laura Klein, rare Engagement Coordinator and lead organizer for the Walk & Run for rare. “Throughout the week we have four pop-up walks, with fun themes and giveaways, being led by rare staff. Anyone who registers for the event has the option to join and walk the 5km route alongside other participants instead of doing it virtually”. More details about the pop-up walks can be found at walkforrare.ca.

The cost to register to participate in the event is $25, and participants can sign up at walkforrare.ca. The $25 fee can be waived if registrants raise $50 or more in pledges towards the Turn the Map Green campaign, and children 12 and under are free. Further details are on the website.

“We hope to raise $50,000 this year, enough to preserve 25,000 square metres of sensitive lands and, thus far, we’re almost halfway there,” says Stephanie Sobek-Swant, Executive Director for rare. “We’re excited to see participants on the trails starting September 13th as they raise funds to protect the rare lands of our community.”

At the end of the day, Sunday, September 19, Walk & Run organizers will host a livestream to thank the participants and the donors, and to announce how much was raised. Prize draws will be held and winners announced. More details about this livestream will be posted at walkforrare.ca.
