Greentec in Cambridge agrees to expanded partnership with Call2Recycle

Greentec in Cambridge has announced a new agreement with Call2Recycle to process more of Ontario’s recycled batteries.

The agreement will see their facility in Cambridge process all batteries collected in the Call2Recycle program in Ontario beginning in May.

The company’s CEO Tony Perotta said they have been working with Call2Recycle for the last few years and the aim is to optimize recycling efforts in the province by sorting batteries locally instead of shipping them out of the province.

“There is a growing volume of batteries collected in Ontario,” said Perotta. “Our mandate is to collect as many as we can to keep them out of landfills, and we want to make sure we have a positive impact on the environment and reduce our carbon footprint.”

In a press release, Call2Recycle said they increased the amount of batteries recycled in the province by 58 per cent in 2023. They currently operate over 12,000 drop off sites across the country. Perotta noted that the program last year collected over six million kilograms of batteries and they are aimed to increase that by over 50 per cent.

“A lot of households don’t know what to do with these batteries. Once they realize that there are these convenient drop off locations…I think we’re going to be able to double, if not triple the volume that is currently being collected in Ontario.”

Perotta said the company is also piloting smart device recycle drop off programs in high traffic areas, such as retail stores. In December, Greentec launched the Phones4Food campaign, which will provide a $5 donation for every device donated.
