Conservatives OK to have used CBC footage in election attack ads, court rules

By The Canadian Press

TORONTO — A court has decided the Conservative party was within its rights to use CBC news footage for election attack ads.

In a decision today, Federal Court found use of the material amounted to fair dealing.

The public broadcaster had argued the party’s use infringed copyright.

CBC also said it was damaging to its integrity and impartiality.

However, the judge found, all things considered, the use in the ads and tweets was fair.

He said there was no evidence the situation had damaged the broadcaster.
