Memories of 2016 flood haunt Baton Rouge ahead of Barry

BATON ROUGE, La. — Memories of an epic flood that caused billions of dollars in damage had Louisiana’s capital on edge Friday as Tropical Storm Barry gained strength in the Gulf of Mexico.
Storms that dumped more than 20 inches (50 centimetres) of rain across southeastern Louisiana three years ago left much of Baton Rouge and surrounding parishes under water.
The experience still haunts many, so residents are filling sand bags and getting their homes ready for another deluge.
Tiffany Favre used wooden blocks to lift a new couch off the floor Friday. She lives near a river and had about 1 foot (30 centimetres) of water in her home in 2016.
Kaci Douglas and her son were among dozens of people filling sand bags at a fire station. She says it’s better to be safe than sorry.
