Snows keep Colorado ski resorts open, mountain passes closed

DENVER — Deep snowfalls are letting Colorado ski resorts extend their seasons, but keeping some high-altitude highways popular among tourists closed through the Memorial Day weekend.

Purgatory Resort near Durango and Aspen Mountain were among the ski resorts planning to be open. Aspen received more than a foot of snow over the past week.

Arapahoe Basin extended its seasons through the weekend of June 14-16, two weeks later than originally planned.

Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park was closed.

Also closed through the weekend were Independence Pass near Aspen, Kebler Pass near Crested Butte and Mount Evans Road, a 14-mile scenic highway near Evergreen that that typically opens by Memorial Day.

Colorado highway officials say they will remain closed until further notice.
