Another Paterson police officer facing civil rights charges

PATERSON, N.J. — Another officer with a northern New Jersey police department has been accused of stopping vehicles, detaining the occupants and searching the autos without justification, sometimes also taking cash and other items.

Daniel Pent is the fourth Paterson officer charged in the ongoing probe.

The 32-year-old Paterson resident was arrested Tuesday at police headquarters by FBI agents on a complaint charging him with conspiring to deprive individuals of civil rights under colour of law. He was scheduled to make his initial court appearance later in the day, but it wasn’t known if he’s retained an attorney.

Pent faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. He has been suspended without pay for 30 days and, after that, will be placed on paid administrative leave until the charges are resolved.
