Ontario sex-ed curriculum will still teach some modern themes: minister

Ontario’s education minister says students will still be taught about concepts like consent, cyber safety and gender identity this fall despite her government’s plan to scrap the province’s modernized sex-ed curriculum.

Lisa Thompson says the portion of the curriculum being replaced deals with “developing sexual relations,” adding that specifics will be provided later today.

Last week, the province’s new Progressive Conservative government said teachers will use the 1998 version of the sex-ed curriculum this fall as consultations are carried out for a new document.

Critics said the old version of the curriculum did not include many modern themes that children needed to keep themselves safe online and did not address things like same sex marriage.

Premier Doug Ford had repeatedly promised to repeal and replace the sex-ed curriculum, saying parents had not been adequately consulted on it.

The opposition NDP has said Ford is catering to social conservative supporters who helped him win the Tory leadership earlier this year.
