HWY 8 ramp to 401 eastbound set to close overnight Friday

You may need to plan an alternate if you have evening driving plans on Friday.

According to the Ministry of Transportation’s website, the on-ramp from Highway 8 to the 401 eastbound will be closed starting at 11 p.m.

The full ramp closure was in effect until Saturday morning — it reopened just before 7:30 a.m.

MTO Spokesperson Liane Fisher-Bloxam tells 570 NEWS the full ramp closure is required to temporarily extend the eastbound ramp lanes.

“This extension of the Highway 8 ramp lanes is part of the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to continuously monitor and implement opportunities to improve traffic conditions through the construction zone.”

Fisher-Bloxam adds there may be another headache for motorists in that same stretch on Friday night.

“To undertake this work, Highway 8 may be reduced to a single lane at Sportsworld Drive from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Friday, June 15, in advance of a full closure of Highway 8 at Highway 401.”

The MTO says this is all part of the ongoing project to widen the 401 from six to ten lanes between HWY 8 and Hespeler Road.

Emergency detours will be in place through construction – and motorists can use Hespeler to access the 401 eastbound throughout the HWY 8 ramp closure.
