One dead, officer wounded in Scarborough shooting

One man is dead and a Toronto police officer has been injured after an overnight shooting in Scarborough.

Emergency crews were called to Hymus Road and Warden Avenue, between Eglinton and St. Clair avenues, just after midnight Thursday for reports of a person with a gun.

According to the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which is investigating the incident, officers located the man in a vehicle outside of a pub.

The SIU said there was an exchange of gunfire between officers and the man, and the man was struck multiple times.

Paramedics said the man suffered critical injuries and was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The officer also suffered a gunshot wound during the incident and was rushed to hospital in serious but stable condition.

Paramedics said the officer’s injuries could have been much worse had be not been wearing a bulletproof vest.
