Farwell 4 Hire smashes $100,000 goal

During the month of May, 570 NEWS Talk Show Host and Kitchener Rangers play-by-play announcer Mike Farwell raised over $135,000 for Cystic Fibrosis research, smashing his ambitious 2018 goal of $100,000.

This is a record breaking total for the Farwell 4 Hire campaign, and a large jump from the $88,000 raised last year.

Farwell lost two sisters to Cystic Fibrosis. He works during the month of May, which is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness month, to complete odd jobs throughout Waterloo Region in exchange for donations to CF research.

This year, Farwell says he has been referring to the campaign as ‘the year of the kid.’

“I had kids turning over birthday party money, school children who started a thing called a ‘community club’ at Chicopee Hills Public School, kids hosting lemonade stands, selling freezies to donate to our campaign,” says Farwell. “That just fills me with inspiration and hope for the future philanthropist’s in our community.”

After 33 days of odd jobs, Farwell says he isn’t slowing down any time soon.

“I’m really reluctant to talk about any level of fatigue because I know full well having watched what my sisters went through, and how difficult it is to live with Cystic Fibrosis, and try to breath through a straw essentially on a daily basis… but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little bit worn out.”

When asked about his most unique ‘job’ experience this year, Farwell says he had the opportunity to feed and check-in on backyard chickens for a local family while they were away on a long weekend.

Farwell tend to the chickens Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning, he says the bonus was – he got to keep the eggs.

In total, the fifth annual Farwell 4 Hire campaign raised $135,661.88 for Cystic Fibrosis research… and four eggs.
