Prosecution dropped against couple from Ayr charged for fraud for alleged fake fundraiser

The prosecution has been dropped against a couple from Ayr who were charged with fraud for allegedly pocketing the money from a fundraiser for their sick child.

Charges have been stayed against Josh and Cynthia DeSilva, and the Crown Prosecutors office in Kitchener will not be seeking a new trial.

Back in 2015, the DeSilva’s had put together a fundraising with an event billed as a world record attempt at largest water balloon fight.

It was a benefit for their daughter as she coped with a genetic disease.

Regional Police arrested them the next year, saying the money never went to any charity.

Charges were stayed at the Regional courthouse today.

An email to 570 NEWS from the Crown says, in part, the case was taking up far too many resources, and, “…we came to the conclusion that the public interest was no longer served in continuing the prosecution….There will be no further prosecution of this case.”
