Report on safe injection sites in Waterloo Region postponed until June

A report on potential locations for supervized injection sites in our region has been delayed by council.

Regional Councillor Sean Strickland joined The Jennifer Campbell Show Wednesday.

He says staff had hoped to bring the report back yesterday, but the new target is June 19th.

“Public Health, staff, and council, want to make sure we cross every ‘T’ and dot every ‘I’ and understand the whole opioid crisis and also the ramifications and impacts of putting into place these supervised consumption sites,” he said.

Regional Council and the councils of the three cities have been receptive to the idea of safe injection sites in Waterloo Region, but the location of those sites has been a major sticking point for all three cities.

“More community conversation will happen,” says Strickland.

“I can’t tell you exactly when the final deadline will be for finally choosing the sites, but there will be more community consultation and I anticipate sometime in the Fall we’ll make the final decision.”
