No ads outside ION LRT trains, say Regional Council

Brand recognition is one of the keys to every successful business venture.

But a recent Regional Council ruling is taking away opportunities for potential advertisers from having their brand on the outside of ION LRT trains.

Regional Councillor Karl Kiefer admits to The Mike Farwell Show they do stand to lose on revenue streams, but they have a brand of their own in mind: ION LRT.

“We want to keep it clear on the outside of the train,” he said, “To really show off the (ION LRT) branding, so the branding is the main thing.”

So how much money could they be losing out on?

By comparison, it’s said around $500-thousand dollars is earned in revenue from external and internal advertising on Grand River Transit buses.

Kiefer says even that is up for review.

“There’s going to be a new contract next year, with regards to the regular buses,” he said, “And the question will be: Do we prevent the wraparound on them as well, but still have some what they would call ‘tasteful’ advertising.”

He says though, potential advertisers will still have a chance to promote their product on the inside of ION LRT trains.
