Damage at $800,000 following fire in Cambridge

The Cambridge Fire Department responded to a fire involving three town-homes Tuesday afternoon.

The fire broke out on Chalmers Street, in the Main and Elgin area.

The City of Cambridge said in a tweet around 5:20 p.m. that the fire was under control, but smoke could still be seen in the area.

Cambridge Fire Chief Neil Main says three units were engulfed in flames, a fourth unit suffered water and smoke damage.

“A fire started in the end unit…and spread to the other two units,” Main said, “When crews arrived, the first two units were fully involved and proceeded to the roof between a third and a fourth unit to create a hole there, to stop the fire from spreading.”

A truck parked at one of the homes was destroyed.

Initial reports say four people were in two of the homes — a babysitter and a five-year old child in one, a father and his young child in another — but crews later found out the units were empty.

Once they got that information — plus crews bringing a few cats and dogs to safety in nearby homes — Main says they went to work on the blaze, starting from the roof and moving down.

The City says five stations responded to the fire and worked quickly to get everything under control.

On Wednesday morning, the damage estimate was put at $800,000.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office is also involved in the investigation.

The cause is unknown at this time.
