UW says high security costs for cancelled Faith Goldy event “matter of regret”

When it comes to a controversial speaking event at the University of Waterloo getting cancelled because security costs went too high, a UW spokesperson says -“Yes, that’s a matter of regret.”

Nick Manning tells the Mike Farwell Show the original estimate for security for Monday’s event with ultra-conservative, Faith Goldy, was only $1,600 – but by yesterday, it was over $28,000

Organizer Lindsay Shepherd, the famous Wilfrid Laurier teaching assistant, tweeted yesterday about how she had to cancel the event because security costs went far too high.

Manning says that cost estimate included keeping protesters safe outside, but also making sure no one could pull a gun inside the event.

Manning says security costs for any event are constantly evolving, and they work in part with Regional Police to decide on how much security is needed.

An event with Goldy last month at Laurier, also put on by teaching assistant Lindsay Shepherd, was met with protesters, and was stopped when someone pulled a fire alarm as Goldy began her talk.

Manning emphasizes it was not UW putting on this event — the school was only renting out the space.

He says even if any given speaker could be considered racist, the school is committed to the free and open discussion of ideas.
