No charges laid against Stratford officer after suspect injured in chase

The Special Investigations Unit says it will not pursue any charges against a Stratford Police officer after a chase last year.

A statement released Wednesday says a 27-year-old man suffered a back injury after a foot chase on May 4th.

The officer on patrol at the time pulled over a vehicle he believed had outstanding warrants.

Once the car came to a stop, the passenger in the yellow Corvette got out of the car and ran away

After repeatedly ignoring requests by the officer to stop, the officer tried to fire off a taser-like weapon – but was unsuccessful.

A short foot chase ensued where the male officer managed to tackle the suspect to the ground.

Punches were thrown by the officer in order to gain the upper hand and place the suspect in handcuffs.

As a result of the scuffle, the male suspect was diagnosed with bulged discs at his fourth and fifth lumbar levels.

Meanwhile, another officer who was trying to help got entangled in an electric fence, and was electrocuted and received medical attention.

The SIU says the officer acted within his limits, and they will not be laying any charges.
