Cambridge votes to keep safe injection site out of downtown cores

Cambridge city council is doing what it can before a regional site location meeting happens in another month regarding safe injection sites.

Councillor Frank Monteiro oversees the Galt core and tells 570 NEWS that council took action on Tuesday night.

“Last night, we passed an interim bylaw…not to have OPS (overdose prevention site) or SIS (safe injection site), anywhere in the cores.”

The bylaw will give the Cambridge cores a 500 metre buffer.

“We cannot sustain an OPS/SIS, call it what you want, in a downtown core…We had to have, reassure the business people that have invested or has invested in the cores, give them some
piece of mind.” added Monteiro.

On Tuesday, regional council voted to move ahead with plans despite Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig tabling a motion to have the region consult with his city to develop criteria for possible locations
for sites in Cambridge.

Cambridge wants their cores exempt from an upcoming report.
